The most ancient and least disturbed forest ecosystem in eastern North America clings to the vertical cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment. Prior to 1988 it had escaped detection even though the entire forest was in plain view and was being visited by thousands upon thousands of people every year. The reason no one had discovered the forest was that the trees were relatively small and lived on the vertical cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment. The Last Stand reveals the complete account of the discovery of this ancient forest, of the miraculous properties of the trees forming this forest (eastern white cedar), and of what is was like for researchers to live, work and study within this forest. The east-west tilt of the Peninsula results in a general
flow of waters toward Lake Huron. Some of this drainage
occurs beneath the surface in underground channels
and rivers that have cut their way through the
soft porous rock. On the surface, the northern Bruce
is dotted with wetlands and lakes and has a history of
rich inland fisheries.

Within [Bruce Peninsula National Park], surface waters
move northeast to southwest. A complex of inland
lakes, including Emmett, Crane, George, Umbrella,
and Upper and Lower Andrew, are found in the north
central portion of the Park; some occupy basins carved
by glacial action from the bedrock. In addition to the
surface flow, there is some underground drainage
through caves and fissures in the bedrock. The park
area also has several different types of beaches: sand,
cobble, and boulder.

Map is based on the traditional knowledge of the elders of the Saugeen Ojibway Nations and current research. It shows the territory and treaty areas of the Saugeen Ojibway peoples, who have inhabited the Bruce Peninsula and areas to the south of it for thousands of years. Sauking Neyashing translated means “homeland of the Saugeen Nations, this beautiful land partially surrounded by water.” As well as current reserve lands, the Saugeen Ojibway Nations (composed of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation and the Saugeen Ojibway Unceded First Nation) share a hunting ground known as Nitaagekamiing, which is bounded on three sides by the national park. The First Nations collectively launched a land claim in 1994 for part of their traditional territories, claiming breach of trust by the Canadian government in meeting its obligation to protect Aboriginal lands. The claim seeks return of lands that remain unsold and financial compensation for the loss of use of the peninsula.

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources designates
ANSIs that recognize either distinctive “life science”
features, such as rare species or ecosystems, or
“earth science” features, such as unusual or unique
geological formations. ANSI designation is often
supported by a detailed inventory of the species and
special characteristics of the area, but the designation
itself provides no protection from development
or resource harvesting within the area. The Bruce
County Official Plan recognizes that ANSIs should be
managed as special natural environments and that
development, if it occurs, should be planned to avoid
undermining the ANSIs natural values. However, the
plan also recognizes the County has limited means to
control or permanently protect these special areas.

Protected areas of the Northern Bruce Peninsula

Bruce Peninsula National Park is the largest, but not
the only, fully protected area on the northern Bruce
Peninsula. There are five provincial parks and nature
reserves within the greater park ecosystem of Bruce
Peninsula National Park as well as a handful of private
nature reserves and Fathom Five National Marine Park
(which includes a number of islands and a small mainland
area) . This diversity of protected areas reflects
the high degree of biological diversity and the number
of rare and unusual species and ecosystems found on
the Bruce. But protected areas on their own cannot
protect species and ecosystems. Species may have
home ranges that are much larger than any one protected
area or rare species may be found in areas that
are not protected. This is why scientists are increasingly
calling for the establishment of landscape linkages
between different protected areas and for stewardship
of private lands.

Mono Cliffs Provincial Park contains some of the oldest, intact, old growth White Cedar forests in eastern North America. Research has shown that some cedars have survived on the escarpment face for over 700 years and are now the oldest living trees in Ontario. Despite their age, they may be no more than five centimeters thick and a metre high. The cedars have endured the worst elements of cold and constant winds that rob the shallow soil of moisture, carry away nutrients and leave the roots exposed. Their twisted shapes are testimony to their struggle. This 750 ha. park also contains some 450 plant species including rare ferns. The Bruce Trail passes thru the park and there are a number of marked trails through the park that interconnect. The trails here are enjoyable any time of the year but are especially lovely in the fall when the maples and beeches in the park exhibit spectacular colour. You are asked to stay on marked paths to protect the environment.

Prime attractions include walks through mixed hardwood forests and above and below tall cliffs. There are two prominent outliers, crevice caves, a glacial spillway, a kettle lake and a kame moraine. The park also features the phenomenon called Jacob’s Ladder and the fabulous views from Lookout Point.

Devil's Monument is a 44' "flowerpot" formation located inshore on the coast of Georgian Bay. This large inland flowerpot or stack was formed by wave action from a post-glacial lake 5,500 years ago. It is directly on the Bruce Trail - accessible from the end of Cape Chin North/Borchard Road on the Bruce peninsula.

The genus Hepatica is a member of the Buttercup family (Ranunculacae) it's nearest relative is Anemone to which genus it once belonged. The first named species Anemone hepatica is now known as Hepatica nobilis. There are possibly 12 or more species of Hepatica distributed throughout the northern temperate zone, across most of Europe, Asia, North America and Canada but sadly not in Great Britain. Hepaticas are small, clump forming, almost evergreen perennials and are among the most beautiful flowers of early spring, appearing during the first mild spells of the new year. On bright sunny days, the many single flowers open wide to display their simple beauty and unobtrusive charm. Blue is the usual colour, but pink and white flowers are not uncommon. The colour and form of the stamens and stigma can be very variable, ranging from white, cream and pink to blue, red and even green.

The hairy new leaves unfurl just after flowering in March or April. They are three to five lobed, more usually three, mainly green, but some leaves have very beautiful variegations or marbling on the upper surface.

Hepaticas can be found growing in the wild on both acid and alkaline soils. They usually grow in the leaf-litter, which tends to be neutral or slightly acid. What is important is that they have excellent drainage without drying out completely, plenty of humus and a good source of nutrients. This is often the case in limestone areas where hepaticas are frequently found, but it is misleading to say that hepaticas actually need lime.

Hepaticas we have seen growing in the wild were generally found on woodland slopes, growing in leaf-mould with plenty of moisture in early spring. These slopes are much drier in the summer, but by then the plants are covered in dense shade from the tree canopy above.

Encompassing 116 hectares of Niagara Escarpment land, the Pottawatomi Conservation Area features scenic Jones Falls. Cascading 12 meters over the escarpment, the Pottawatomi River eventually makes its way to Owen Sound Bay on Georgian Bay.

The Pottawatomi Conservation Area contains various trees and shrubs ranging from Wild Rose to hard maples. Great white trillium and columbine are among the wildflowers that can be found. Cliff Swallows, Pileated woodpeckers, porcupines and woodchucks are common to the conservation area, as are garter snakes and painted turtles.

The Sydenham River, below the escarpment, possesses ideal conditions for migrating fish and other aquatic species. Brown trout, Rainbow trout and Chinook salmon use this area for feeding and spawning grounds.

The Bruce Trail follows the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, one of the thirteen UNESCO World Biosphere Reserves in Canada, for more than 800 km (500 mi).

The trail is named after Bruce County which was named after James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin who was Governor General of the Province of Canada from 1847-1854.

The trail begins in the south in Queenston, Ontario, on the Niagara River, not far from Niagara Falls. The cairn marking its southern terminus is in a parking lot, about 160 metres (520 ft) from General Brock's Monument on the easterly side of the monument's park grounds. From there, it travels through the major towns and cities of St. Catharines where it passes through wine country near the Short Hills Bench, Hamilton, Burlington, Milton, Halton Hills, Owen Sound, Wiarton and Tobermory.

It passes through parks operated by various levels of government, including Woodend Conservation Area in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Battlefield Park in Stoney Creek, Dundas Valley Conservation Area in Dundas, the Hamilton-Brantford Rail Trail, Mount Nemo Conservation Area, Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area, Crawford Lake Conservation Area, Mono Cliffs Provincial Park, and the Bruce Peninsula National Park between Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. Its northern terminus is in Tobermory, the jumping off point for Fathom Five National Marine Park.

Approximately half of the trail runs through public land. In order to make a complete connection the trail runs partly on private property and partly on road allowances. When going through private property, the BTC has made agreements with landowners to allow trail users to pass through. Using roads is not the best route for the trail. In these sections the BTC is involved in acquiring land along what it calls the 'optimum route'.
